1928: Indians first baseman Lew Fonseca sits in third in the American League in batting at .367, staving the Yankees’ Babe Ruth (.362) and Lou Gehrig (.351).

2004: Casey Blake’s walkoff home run accounts for the lone run in the Indians’ 1-0 win over the A’s, and Perry hangs on for a 7-5 Division III regional semifinal win over CVCA in Massillon.

1993: Several area athletes take home titles during the first day of regional competition in Divisions I and III, including the South girls 4x800-meter relay, Euclid’s Bob Lemieux (pole vault) and Kirtland’s Dan Podojil (long jump).

1982: Chagrin Falls’ Sam Adams takes first in the discus with a best effort of 164 feet, 8 inches and Perry’s Bill Meredith is fourth during the Class AA Brooklyn Regional.

1971: Al Hofricter cards an eagle on the 18th hole and a 38 for his round at Tamarac as North edges Maple Heights in a Greater Cleveland Conference golf dual.

1960: Paul Matchinga strikes out eight in a complete game and gets the victory after Dan Szuhay triples and scores on an error in the ninth as Riverside edges Geneva, 1-0, in Northeastern Conference baseball.

1949: Cleveland boxer Joey Maxim lays claim to the National Boxing Association American light heavyweight title with a 15-round unanimous decision over Gus Lesnevich in Cincinnati.

1938: Without a cinder track of its own, Harvey is told to stop using the Baltimore & Ohio tracks behind the school for practice and must opt for the fairgrounds four miles away.

1927: Madison Golf Lakelands Country Club pro Bill Alves announces an upcoming “surprise tournament” for club members, promising a long list of prizes for the winners.

2003: Brandon Phillips’ walkoff home run gives the Indians a 6-4 victory over the visiting Tigers, and former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy interviews for the vacant Cavaliers vacancy.

1992: Bel MacKinnon’s two-out, two-run single plates Kelly Nagy with the winning run as Villa Angela-St. Joseph rallies past St. Augustine, 7-6, in the opener of a softball twinbill.

1981: Matt Zayakowsky scores on a Bob Leeper squeeze bunt in the seventh to give Berkshire a 4-3 win over Beachwood, and Steve Richardson strikes out 11 in Riverside’s 6-2 win over Conneaut.

1970: The Euclid doubles team of Jim Stiscak and Joe Beluschak sweeps Brush’s Mark Singerman and Sheldon Gordon, 6-4, 7-5, in the Euclid District tennis tournament final.

1959: Minnie Minoso goes 3-for-4 with a home run and rookie Jim Perry gets the win in relief as the Indians stave off a late rally bid by the Red Sox for a 4-3 win in Boston.

1948: Bill Kennedy earns his first major-league win and Ken Keltner hits a home run as the Indians defeat the last-place White Sox, 9-2, in the second game of a doubleheader.

1937: Cleveland boxer Patsy Perroni, outweighed by seven pounds, loses a unanimous decision to light heavyweight champion John Henry Lewis during a 10-round fight at Madison Square Garden.

1926: The Indians chase Yankees starter Waite Hoyt in the sixth and take a 9-8 lead, but Babe Ruth answers with a home run in the bottom of the frame to give New York the lead for good in a 13-9 win.

2002: The Indians are shut down by one of their former prospects, Paul Byrd, in a 4-1 loss at Kansas City, finishing off a three-game sweep in which they hit .200 and scored four runs.

1991: Indians outfielder Albert Belle throws a foul ball at fan Jeff Pillar in the left-field bleachers after Pillar heckled Belle during the seventh inning of a game against the Angels.

1980: John Krizman goes the distance and also belts a home run as Lake Catholic takes out Madison, 9-4, in the first game of a baseball twinbill.

1969: Kirtland senior Gary Fails sweeps the 120 high and 180 low hurdles and also takes the high jump during the Class A Chagrin Falls District track and field meet.

1958: Mayfield junior Bill Spetrino is profiled by the Painesville Telegraph for his comeback from three fractured vertebrae to compete in track while wearing a neck brace and being undefeated in the 440.

1947: Don Shula wins the 100-yard dash and 440 run as Harvey claims nine of 14 events in the first-ever night track and field meet at Mentor that also features Fairport and Chardon.

1936: Wickliffe’s Victor June sets the Lake/Geauga record in the boys shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 10 ½ inches during qualifying heats for the upcoming Lake/Geauga championships.

1925: Harvey High School unveils plans to field boys and girls tennis teams for the first time, including female division city champions Margaret Persons and Margaret Williams.

2001: Elyse Lucas strikes out 10 in a two-hitter as NDCL blanks Elyria Catholic, 2-0, and the Hawken girls get first-day wins at the Red Raider Invitational from Liz Munn (shot put), Christine Shin (long jump) and their 4x800.

1990: Brad Daugherty scores a franchise playoff-record 34 points as the Cavaliers take out the 76ers, 108-96, to force a decisive Game 5 in the teams’ Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.

1979: Kathy Snyder’s ninth-inning single plates the winning run in Mentor’s 7-6 softball victory over nonconference foe Lincoln West.

One year ago today, President Barack Obama interrupted Sunday night television programming to announce that terrorist leader Osama bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan.

I had the pleasure of doing the front page for the May 2, 2011, paper. While at work that night, I was happy with how I reworked my page, but after seeing other front pages on Newseum, I'm bummed that I couldn't have come up with something better.

Even before the news broke, May 1 had made for an interesting shift at work. We were switching to a smaller template (from 11.625-by-21 inches to 9.9-by-20.3 inches), and that was the first night we were doing deadline pages in that format. 

My crack team of news-deskers that night included Danielle Capriato and Tricia Ambrose. I would not have been able to get the paper switched around if they didn't jump in immediately to help out with updating our website and sending our other pages to the pressroom.
